Cockermouth has now gained official fairtrade status from the Fairtrade Foundation. The status shows that Cockermouth has now joined 15 other towns and villages in Cumbria, and as a county we have the highest figure of fairtrade status villages and towns. The county council has even declared that Cumbria is a fairtrade county, such is the committment to fairtrade in Cumbria.

Fairtrade is a trading system which guarantees that farmers in developing countries receive a fair price for their product, which helps them to work their way out of poverty and towards sustainable livelihoods.
