Cockermouth is situated on the A66 trunk road from Penrith (Junction 40 M6) to Workington. Buses run to Cockermouth from Whitehaven, Workington, Carlisle and Penrith. The nearest Railway Station is at Penrith. There are several public car parks, including one that can accommodate coaches.

A particularly attractive feature of Cockermouth is the large number of small independant shops offering a wide variety of goods to the visitor.

Within a short distance are some of the most attractive lakes in the Lake District - Loweswater, Buttermere and Crummock Water.
