Town Council joins Fight against Out of Town store at Cockermouth

In the latest threat to Cockermouth's traditional town centre shops Allerdale Planning Panel are to consider an application for a retail out of town superstore in Low Road. The applicant's agents claim the store, with free car parking, could be used by the Bargain Madness chain. Both the Town Council and Chamber of Trade have objected saying the plans would further undermine the town centre. The applicant's agents admit the proposed store would suck in £6.3 million turnover and divert £0.8 million business from the town centre. Cockermouth town centre has already seen numerous shops become charity shops as trade declines. Allerdale recently allowed a major out of town centre retail development at Oakhurst. The Allerdale planning officials recommended approval to a previous similar application despite national guidelines that "planners should seek to ensure the vitality of town centres." Planning officials also appear to have ignored the fact that the site in Low Road is outside the Local Plan allocation. A date for the planning panel deliberations has not yet been announced. Full details of the planning applcation can be viewed here at the Allerdale website: http://planning.allerdale.gov.uk/portal/servlets/ApplicationSearchServlet?PKID=177598
