Cockermouth Soccer Club and Rotary Club mark the anniversary of the Great War Truce Soccer match-December 2014



The Rotary Club of Cockermouth in 2014 organised a recreation of the day in Christmas 1914 the British and German soldiers exhanged greetings and stopped all fighting along parts of the Western Front. During that day of peace the soldiers held an improptu soccer kick about. The U12 players from Cockermouths Junior Socccer squad agreed to stage the reconstruction of the Truce Soccer match.
Club President Bob Harwood welcomed everyone and at half-time the Rev'd. Alistair Smeaton - URC Minister, Rev'd . Michael Jackson - and Rev'd. Canon Wendy Sanders - Cockermouth Rotary Club members spoke on the themes of reconciliation.
Cockermouth Mechanics Band played both the British and German national anthems and the Last Post. There was a Minutes Silence to mark Remembrance of the millions who died. Castlegate Singers sang Silent Night, Holy Night in both German and English .
