The TIC provides information on what to see and do, entertainments and events, places of interest, travel and transport, and where to stay. It has information on local accommodation, and provides a free local booking service for personal callers.

Cockermouth TIC is at the end of Market Street which is off Market Place opposite The Allerdale Court Hotel. It is situated within a splendid 19th century building, once a Wesleyan Chapel and now the Town Hall.

The TIC occupies the ground floor while the council chambers are on the floor above. This is a really light and spacious environment with neat and colourful displays of relevant information of interest to visitors and local people alike.

The generous size of the room affords the opportunity to hold regular exhibitions (and demonstrations) of work by local artists and crafts people as well as more permanent exhibitions, such as that of Jennings Breweries.

The TIC is managed by Julia Hindle supported by her enthusiastic team of assistants Rachel, Ann, Veronica, and Trish. Julia responded to a number of questions as follows:

• What do you like most about your job?
  Helping people and getting a feeling of satisfaction when they are successfully directed to something that meets their needs.
• Why would you recommend people to come to Cockermouth?
  It’s a very friendly all-weather resort and it’s well positioned for exploring the quieter parts of The Lake District
• What is the most unusual question you have ever been asked?
  “Where’s the beach?” (Perhaps the town‘s name gives the impression of a river running out to sea, whereas it refers to the River Cocker running into the River Derwent).

The opening hours all year round are:

• Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm (closed 12.30-1am lunch)
• Saturdays: 10am to 2pm.
• Sundays Closed.
