The Cockermouth Graveyards.

The project to record the headstone inscriptions in Cockermouth Cemetery began in the Autumn of 2004. Gloria Edwards of the Kirkgate Centre Museum Group suggested the idea to members of the group and, together with a band of additional volunteers, this major project got under way. Eric Cass has been transcriber of more than 2,000 inscriptions, and thanks are due to the following people who have given their time to record headstones, sometimes in the most inaccessible of places and in inclement weather:

Gloria Edwards (co-ordinator), Eric Cass (transcriber), Josephine Brown, Harold Martin, Aline Elliott, Ted Petty, Eric Lawrence, Joan Wilson, Mick Jane, Brian Clavey, Keith Jackson, Mary Prentice, Brigid Donnelly, Maureen Conneally, Barry Evans, Janet Hayter and Lynne Steadman. Harold Burslem has photographed most of the headstone inscriptions - Lynne Steadman and Mary Prentice photographed the headstones that they recorded.

All the headstone inscriptions in the old part of the Cemetery have now been recorded. Inscriptions in the remaining part of the Cemetery (over the bridge crossing Tom Rudd Beck) will be added to on an ongoing basis. We hope that these inscriptions will prove a valuable resource for both family and local historians.

Grave numbers where given are mostly approximate, and these have been taken from burial registers and plans held by Allerdale's Bereavement Services Officer (Mr Robert Deacon). His office may be contacted at Allerdale House, Workington, CA14 3YJ - 01900 702620 (email: bereavement.services@allerdale.gov.uk).

Any queries regarding the project should be addressed to Gloria Edwards at the Kirkgate Centre, Cockermouth (email: museumgroup@hotmail.com)

Whilst every effort has been made to record the inscriptions as accurately as possible, we apologise for any errors that may occur due to the poor condition of some of the older headstones.
